Searching for Sugar Man

1hr 26min.

UK/Sweden 2012. Directed by Malik Bendjelloul.

Winner of the Best Documentary award at the 2013 Oscars and BAFTAs

This fascinating documentary follows two South African friends as they attempt to track down Detroit singer-songwriter Sixto Diaz Rodriguez and see if rumours of his untimely death are true.

Although his music languished in obscurity in America, meaning that he left the music business in the early 1970s, Rodriguez became a cult figure in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa (where his album At His Best went platinum, and where he was revered as an anti-establishment icon by the anti-apartheid movement). Rodriguez’s Dylan-esque music provides a stirring soundtrack to a moving tale of talent eventually receiving its well-earned reward.
