Somers Town
From Friday 22nd August 2008 | book tickets

1hr 15, UK 2008. Directed by Shane Meadows. With Thomas Turgoose.
The latest film from Meadows is a look at the transition from childhood to adulthood and the hostilities of urban living. Tommo (Turgoose, last seen in This is England), just turned 16 and released from social care, runs away to London from a difficult life in Nottingham. Marek, a Polish immigrant, lives with his father, who drinks with his friends after working on a construction site. The quiet and sensitive Marek is not comfortable in his father’s world. Both boys struggle to make sense of their new environment and a chance meeting in Somers Town leads them to form an unexpected partnership. The film’s frequently uncompromising portrait of the realities of life for those on the margins of society is leavened by Meadows’ characteristic humour and sympathy for his characters.
