Hopper’s low-budget movie of odyssey and alienation at the time of Vietnam, whose success brought Hollywood to its knees by initiating a disastrous cycle of imitative youth pictures. The story of two dope-dealing bikers who set out across country in a doomed search for ‘the real America’ epitomises its period and a romantic, contradictory sensibility. With a great rock/folk score and a star-making performance from Jack Nicholson as the drunken lawyer who hitches along for the ride.
