A Single Man
Friday 4th June | 6.00pm book tickets
1hr 41. USA 2009. Directed by Tom Ford. With Colin Firth, Julianne Moore.
Based on the landmark novel by Christopher Isherwood of the same name, this is the directorial debut of Tom Ford, the celebrated fashion designer. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, A Single Man is the story of George Falconer, a 52 year old British professor (Firth) who is struggling to find meaning in his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim. The film follows George from the fierce loneliness of his morning through his routine day and transformative night. Along the way, he passes in and out of the local college where he teaches English literature to uninspired students. He crosses paths with a flirty student, Kenny, who sees George as a kindred spirit, and a charming hustler, Carlos, while also making time for his close friend, Charley (Moore). All the while he is contemplating ending his life. A Single Man is a tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and the ultimate importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life.
