September update

Over £935,000 has been raised so far towards the Centenary Restoration Project, for which we have many of you to thank. However, the pressure is on, as we still need a further £133,000 to be able to make this project a reality.

We are fundraising continuously, in every way possible, to reach our target and involve our community. You may have noticed our new donations boxes outside the auditorium and we've recently enlisted the support of many local businesses. We also have applications in with several small trusts and foundations, but donations are not coming in at the pace we had hoped.

Times are tough right now, but that's all the more reason to make this project happen to ensure the survival of the Phoenix in the coming years. Film income alone doesn't cover the cost of keeping this landmark in tip-top shape and we want to give you the facilities you deserve and reverse the wear and tear the building has undergone over the years.

We can't do it without help from our customers and supporters.

Come see us at the Muswell Hill Festival on Sunday 13th September to meet our team and discover more about the cinema and the project.

The Open House weekend, 19th-20th September, is also a great opportunity to really see the cinema in detail, and the improvements which this project will make to the building.

We are fundraising at local tube stations during September. You may have seen us at East Finchley this week and we'll be collecting at Finchley Central on the 16th and Highgate on the 23rd.

We are enormously grateful for any contribution you make to this project.

July update

Our application for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund was approved, but in order to get the money and commence work, we have to have our match funding in place by raising £140,000 by the first week in September. Your help is invaluable. If you have already given then please see if you can think of anyone else that might help - friends that come along to the Phoenix or local businesses that would benefit from the regeneration of this local landmark. If you haven't given then please consider supporting this vital restoration work. The last amount is the most crucial - but we can do it with your help.

Local artist Laura Alvarado has created three prints to commemorate The Phoenix on the eve of its centenary. Each print is one of a limited edition of 150 and they are numbered and signed. Laura is kindly giving the proceeds from sales of the prints to the Centenary Restoration Project. They are priced at £30 unframed and £50 framed and are available to buy from the box office.

June update

We are delighted to announce that our application for Heritage Lottery Funding has been accepted.

We have been awarded £607,000 from the HLF in recognition of the value of this project to benefit the whole community. Our patron Michael Palin said ‘This is terrific news. As the years go by and the old cinemas fall by the wayside, the Phoenix has indeed lived up to its name.’

Our fundraising now only needs a further £151,000 in order to be able to carry out the Centenary Restoration Project.

Look out for a range of fundraising events and activities we have lined up over the coming months. We hope to see you at the East Finchley Festival on Sunday 21st June.

March update

We have now submitted our stage 2 application to the HLF, and we know the outcome of that in June. The other funding is up to £178,000 so we still need a large amount of money to come in to make the project happen. We expect to hear back from at least one Trust this month and we have applications pending with three others.

We had a special screening of The Counterfeiters at the end of February with Adolf Burger one of the actual counterfeiters from the concentration camp. It was a brilliant afternoon and raised £550 for the Restoration Project.

February update

We're almost there with the work on the application. We're holding focus groups this month to research the take-up from new audiences of the heritage activities we'll be running in the restored building. We're also making a film to support the fundraising with out patron, Maureen Lipman. You'll see that on our website and on the screen by the end of March.

January 2009 Update

We've now working on our second, and final stage, application to the Heritage Lottery Fund at the same time we've making applications to Trusts & Foundations for contributions to the project. We have over £176,000 todate, but still need another £275,000. We know it's a tough time financially at the moment, but if you can support please do, you'll be making an investment in the future of this community.

December Update

We've just heard that we've passed the first stage of the Heritage Lottery Fund's application. This means we have the green light to go ahead and make the final application in March 2009. This is a huge boost for the campaign and keeps us on track for the work to be complete in Summer 2009.

Update 28th November

We are delighted to report that in the last two weeks we've received donations of over £13,000! We are very grateful to everyone who is supporting this project, but we still need a further £280,000. Please consider supporting the project if you have yet to do so.

Help Restore The Phoenix

The Phoenix Cinema Trust is planning a project, with the planned support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, to undertake urgent building work to maintain and restore the 1910 auditorium as well as more fully refurbishing the cinema to restore its exterior and interior art deco features to their 1930s glory.

Alongside this, there are plans in place to convert current office space into a substantial café and bar area, featuring a striking terrace at the front of the building overlooking the high street.

The total cost of the project is £1,050,000 and we have applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund for 56% of that figure, of the remaining funds we have already raised 35%.  However we still need to raise another £290,000. The Phoenix needs your help in making these plans a reality.

Night Exterior North Elevation Cafe

Our aim is to restore, renovate and develop this beautiful but aging cinema in time for its centenary celebrations in 2010.

This work will completely transform The Phoenix ensuring its long term future survival, preserving its architectural status and providing opportunities through increased capacity to extend the reach of our work.

Any level that you could support this project on would be enormously beneficial.  Gifts over £500 will be recognised with your name, a year between 1910 - 2010 and a film from that year as part of our 100 years of cinema timeline.
