The Phoenix’s touring exhibition ‘The Phoenix: 100 Years’ is now on show at Hornsey Library, Crouch End, until Wednesday 29 February. If you are passing by do take a look at it and tell us about your memories of coming to The Phoenix.

Looking for the Invisible – The Abstract in South Asian Arts

Followed by Aakash Odedra’s Rising at 8pm in The Place’s Robin Howard Dance Theatre

Akademi in collaboration with The Place presents an opportunity to engage in a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary dialogue between eminent artists across the world of South Asian arts. The symposium will investigate where abstract lies in the South Asian arts through the work of six prominent creators. Invited artists will narrate and present their work through informal conversations with their peers and take participating audiences through a personal journey of artistic/creative discovery. This event promises to be an uplifting and inspiring afternoon for all curious creators, thinkers, artists and audiences.

Looking for the Invisible follows an established history of groundbreaking symposiums such as South Asian Aesthetics – Unwrapped! (Royal Opera House), No Man’s Land – Exploring South Asianness (ICA), and Frame by Frame – A Symposium on the Dance of Indian Cinema and its Transition into Bollywood Dancing (Royal Opera House).

After the symposium, delegates are invited to attend the performance of Aakash Odedra’s ‘Rising’ where he will perform solos choreographed by Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan, and featuring lighting by Michael Hulls.

New Centenary Storybook films

We’ve been busy filming more Centenary Storybook films and putting them up on youtube. Click here to hear stories about people’s memories of first dates at The Rex, what it was like to work here in the past and how it feels to see your heros at a Phoenix event. Our next free South Asian film screening

We’re delighted to announce the next date in our ‘From the Archives’ series, as part of our Centenary celebrations. On Sunday 19^th February 2012, we will hold a free screening at 2pm entitled ‘The Colonial Eye: British Empire images of the Punjab, India 1912 – 1947’, curated by artist Tajender Sagoo.
