Special Early Bird Event Tuesday 23rd June at 1pm: The Big Smoke + Talk

A rare and fascinating glimpse of film footage of London from 1896-1945, this screening is part of the BFI Mediatheque on Tour supported by the Independent Cinema Office (ICO) and drawn from the BFI National Archive. Glimpse Victorians commuting to work, traffic chaos engulfind Edwardian streets, and a smoky 1930s Underground. See the mighty Thames as a working river in early colour film and aerial footage, while extraordinaty home movies illuminate a city under siege as the 1940s bring tragedy and triumph to the capital. Celebrated pianist James Pearson has composed a new score to accompany The Big Smoke, recorded at London's legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott's. We are very pleased to welcome Ros Cranston, a non-fiction curator in the BFI National Archive, for a short talk following the screening.
