Funded Education Programmes

Kids Club

Kids Club was previously funded by Barnet Children’s Fund for which the Phoenix is extremely grateful. Additional funding and support has come from various sources including: The Danish Embassy, The Finnish Embassy, The Sunnyhill Benevolent Fund. Kids Club is now a self sustaining project of the Phoenix Cinema with occasional one-off grants sought for extra special events.

Film Making Classes – Funded by the Barnet Neighbourhood Renewal Fund in partnership with ArtsDepot

In July 2007 work began arranging a course of free film-making workshops for young people from the estates and youth groups around Barnet.  The groups came from The Rainbow Centre, Dollis Valley, The Novo Centre, Grahame Park, the 331 Centre, and the Ayesha Community Education Centre.  The young people took part in master-classes in ‘dance’, ‘acting for screen’, ‘photography’, ‘stage fighting’ and ‘technical theatre’ at the ArtsDepot. The course leader for the first set of workshops was David Laird, who works with his assistant Mo Batsell, and the groups were further supported by youth workers Chris Debono (Rainbow Centre, Dollis Valley) and Tukimbo Leigh (Grahame Park – Barnet Homes).  The film-making workshop leaders for the second set of workshops were Will Martin and Harry Dwyer and the young people were further supported by Sinead Walsh (331 Centre)
21 young people were able to achieve a Bronze Arts Award, equivalent to an NVQ level 1, through these courses.  This was a great achievement for them all. t

'Decisions' and 'Secrets' were premiered at the Phoenix Cinema on 17th January and ‘Remember Valentine’s’ and ‘Muslims or Martians’ were premiered on 30th April.  Copies of the DVDs of these two sets of films are available to buy from the cinema.  The DVDs have a nominal cost of £3 to cover costs and any profit made from the sales will be put towards future education projects.

The Barnet Children’s Film Festival – Funded by the Barnet Children’s Fund

UUsing the London Children’s Film Festival as a launch-pad, the young people of Barnet planned their own film festival here at the Phoenix.  10 groups from around Barnet put forward two young people and one adult supervisor to take part in 4 programming sessions between November 07 and February 08 and a short film-making course during the February half-term run by Straight Curve
The festival ran 10th-14th March 2008 and involved 10 local schools and saw over 1000 young people attending the special screenings at the cinema.  The films the children chose were The Wizard of Oz Censorship: U, Spirited Away Censorship: PG , The Cave of the Yellow Dog Censorship: U, Bee Movie Censorship: U and Back to the Future Censorship: PG.

The DVD of the four films made by the children themselves is available to buy from the cinema.  The DVDs have a nominal cost of £3 to cover costs and any profit made from the sales will be put towards future education projects. If you'd like more information, please email laura@phoenixcinema.co.uk
